Relief Fragment with a Male Hand Grasping a Staff or Scepter

Middle Kingdom

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 109

The fragment preserves part of the hand of a figure facing to the right, who grasps a staff or scepter; red color indicates the figure is male. The fingers are gently rounded from side to side and the nails are carefully detailed. The piece may come from a representation of a deity holding a was-scepter or an official holding a staff of office, though other identifications are also possible.

The hand is rendered in sunk relief, which was traditionally used on exterior decoration, but in the Twelfth Dynasty is also found on interior scenes.
