Relief Fragment with Part of the Figure of a Foreigner

Middle Kingdom
ca. 1961–1917 B.C.
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 109
This fragment preserves part of the thighs and garment of a striding figure facing to the left rendered in fine, low relief. The figure is painted yellow, which normally indicates a female representation, but the striding pose, broad thighs, and short loincloth all specify a male. Yellow color can be used for depictions of male foreigners, including inhabitants of the Near East, and it is likely that the figure shown here originated from a scene of the king receiving tribute or foreign captives.
