Scarab with Sphinx and Uraeus

New Kingdom ?

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 130

A recumbent sphinx –a mythological creature with the body of a lion and the head of a ram– faces right, towards a seated figure of the goddess Maat. Above the sphinx’s back is a winged uraeus, spreading its wings out in a protective gesture.
