Head Saraboid Inscribed with Hieroglyphs

Late Period ?
664–400 BC
Not on view
Depictions of Black African heads according to Greek tradition decorate scaraboids that are characteristic products of the scarab workshops of Naukratis (Dynasty 26). The hieroglyphs incised on the underside, however, are damaged and not prevalent on Naukratis scarabs: a vulture may form the name of the vulture goddess Mut, while the other hieroglyphs do not seem to form an inscription.
