Bowl decorated with cranes, rain, and chrysanthemums

early 14th century
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 233
With steep sloping sides that form a triangular silhouette, this bowl has a highly visible exterior. The design is nearly identical to that of the bowl decorated with phoenixes, clouds and chrysanthemums (on view nearby). Hash marks and small cranes hint at the interior, where four cranes fly through rain. The minimal yet striking images are rendered with dense, repeated strokes. Echoing an exterior motif, a single chrysanthemum appears in the indented center.
