Needle case and bobbin

12th–13th century
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 233
These compact needle cases and bobbins exemplify the relationship between form and function. The hollow inner cylinders provide needle storage, and the segments allow the user to wind different threads onto the same spool. One end of the interior bobbin functions as the top of the outer container. Niello flowers and scrolling as well as densely stamped scallop motifs appear on the open case. Incised arabesques and flora adorn the hidden bobbin.
