Talisman

19th century
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 233
This talisman’s bold curving lines dynamically depict a dragon amid the clouds. Flying in from the top, the creature’s body snakes downward, its face and lively eyes nearly at the center. In contrast, the back of the stone (pictured here) bears three sets of five circles along with small scalelike patterns, perhaps an abstract rendering of a dragon’s skin. While the object’s usage is unknown, its size allows for it to be held in a hand or pocket.
