Yeohlee Teng established her namesake label in New York in 1981 after graduating from Parsons School of Design. Her work is defined by a material focus, a restricted palette, and precise and economical construction. Teng’s process begins with the structural and tactile features of the fabric. Garment shapes develop through the innovative placement of seams, which serve as functional ornament and are arranged to reduce waste during production. The geometric designs are intended to offer an ease and adaptability compatible to her client’s contemporary lifestyle. Teng’s work has been recognized for its architectural qualities and modern sensibility in exhibitions and installations at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology. She received the Cooper Hewitt Design Award in 2004.
