Aux Champs-Elysées

Henri-Edmond Cross (Henri-Edmond Delacroix) French

Not on view

Cross’s lithograph portrays a group of nannies out with their charges on a summer’s day in Paris. In the foreground is the seated figure of one such bonne, the white ribbons of her bonnet cascading over her chair and a girl resting at her feet. In the distance, along the tree-lined avenue, are nannies, horses, and finely dressed ladies whose exaggerated silhouettes—with their corseted waistlines and outlandish hats—appear almost caricatures.
