Chichibu Meisen Kimono with Multicolor Checks

second quarter of the 20th century
Not on view
Composed of alternating triangles and rectangles in various shades of blue, white, red, ochre, and salmon pink, this meisen kimono is evocative of contemporary developments in abstract painting and reflects the openness of the Japanese textile industry to a wide variety of designs, including non-representative compositions. It was produced in the Chichibu region of Saitama Prefecture of Japan (northwest of Tokyo).
