Group of Italians at Ellis Island, New York
Lewis Hine American
Not on view
Hine was a social reformer who used his photographs in slide lectures, periodicals, and pamphlets to sway public opinion and influence public policy. While retaining the dignity of his subjects, Hine exposed inequities, thus allowing his photographs to serve not only as tools for reform but also as the means by which to connect his audience to the experiences of others. This lantern slide is from one of his earliest and most renowned series on immigrants at Ellis Island.
