Pennell, a Philadelphia-born Quaker decided to become an illustrator and printmaker, then worked as a clerk before gaining entrance to the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. He visited Europe for the first time in 1883, on commission from The Century Magazine (formerly Scribner's), and in 1884 illustrated a trip by tricycle between Coventy and Chester. This etching dates from that year, and focuses on an elaborately carved arched stone entrance of an Oxford church, protected by a wrought iron gate, with a student in an academic gown walking by in the street.
