Portrait of Fatou Thioune and friend
Since the early twentieth century, local patrons in West Africa have commissioned, bought, and exchanged photographs that are then carefully archived and stored in albums. While the owners often seek to compose a cohesive narrative through the selection of meaningful images, these albums are in a permanent state of metamorphosis as photographs are added, rearranged, or removed. This photograph is part of a display that recreates this collecting practice, juxtaposing vintage prints by amateur photographers with early Kodak material and real photo postcards.
