Yellow and Blue Vase

1996
Not on view
Katsumata Chieko used Shigaraki clay for this work that was first bisque fired. Then she added color to the surface with solutions of kaolin clay tinted with metal oxides that she applied through a piece of cloth to avoid any trace of brushwork. Afterward she selectively removed portions of the layers of color by sanding. The multiple layers and repeated firings produced the weathered textured surface.
