Wind

2004
Not on view
Kohyama Yasuhisa draws inspiration from ancient Jōmon and Yayoi wares as well as Shigaraki ceramics. Wind is a dynamic example of his Shigaraki-clay works, which he coil-builds, sculpts, and then carves using steel wires. The natural ash surface and edges highlight the roughness of the clay, suggesting an eroding desert rock. No glaze is applied; instead, Kohyama uses kiln placement to create a wide range of colors and subtle tonal shifts in the wood ash
