The etching reproduces in reverse a drawing now at Windsor Castle, once owned by Ludovico Carracci, attributed to Parmigianino by Wittkower; Popham doubted the authenticity of the Windsor drawing in favour of another version in Paris (Popham 1971 no. 476); in turn, Birke favours the traditional attribution of the Windsor drawing to Parmigianino, identifying it as the source of this print
