Bartsch believed this etching to be a copy by Salimbeni of Guido Reni's print of the same subject (B. XVIII.278.1), though Ciampolini rightly argues that Reni copied this precedent by Salimbeni. For a counterproof that reverses the orientation of the inscription see 27.78.1(182)
