Mihrab wall hanging
This textile served as a wall covering for a mihrab or prayer niche in a mosque. Made of delicate muslin (visible open weave) it is embellished with applied gold patterning, and lined with a coarser, more robust handspun cotton. The border of the mihrab cloth is decorated with a floral and leaf meander design. The cloth has a deep indigo-dyed stitched rolled edge.
