Design for a Textile Pattern, possibly for Costumes in the Ballet 'Le Dieu Bleu' (1912)
In creating the illusionary worlds of the productions for the Ballets Russes, Bakst controlled their design up to the smallest detail. His involvement did not end with the costumes and backdrops, but he fretted over the shaping and choice of all objects used in the staging of a show, up to the exact measurements and the patterns on the textiles. Often, these were inspired by his study of historical objects from private collections and museums.
