Schachtanlage Zollverein 12
Colloquially called the "Eiffel Tower of the Ruhr District," this winding tower at the Zollverein coal mine is today protected by UNESCO, just like its namesake. Marrying efficiency with elegance, the winding tower’s form precisely mirrors its function: poised above a mineshaft, the tower’s cables hoist raw materials to the earth’s surface. Masterfully balancing light and shadow, Renger-Patszch apprehends the sculptural quality of this modern monument.
