Tanabe Chikuunsai IV’s work, exhibited widely in Asia, Europe, and the United States, has received numerous awards, including a prize at the 2015 Kinki Regional Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition for this basket. One of the most talented and versatile bamboo artists of his generation—he made his first basket at the age of ten—Chikuunsai IV has carried on his family’s tradition but also experiments with combining lacquer (urushi) and bamboo as well as with creating large installations.
