This mezzotint reproduces a portrait by Reynolds of his friend the famous actor David Garrick, who is shown at a table with papers, books and an inkstand (the related painting of ca. 1775 is at Knole; Mannings 1139). Reynolds's assistant, the artist James Northcote, wrote to his brother in 1773 noting how the actor still appeared youthful on stage, but when he came to visit "begins to grow quite an old man now."
