Partial copy of the Stele for Cao Quan (Cao Quan bei); Painting of bamboo and pine
On loan to The Met
This work of art is currently on loan to the museum. The Stele for Cao Quan was written in 185 CE and is a classic example of Han-dynasty clerical script. Less fluid and flashy than cursive and semicursive writing, clerical script (especially from this period) was admired by scholars of Li Jian’s generation for its imposing solidity. The bottom fan, a painting of bamboo and pine, is one of the few in the set that Li dedicated to Wen Fong. Li calls his student “younger brother Binru” in the inscription, using one of Fong’s early nicknames.
