Francisco "Pancho" Villa was a revolutionary hero from northern Mexico who supported Francisco Madero. He has been described as a social bandit—a sort of Robin Hood—who led the least disciplined group of revolutionaries, out for spoils and adventure. Villa came from a poor background, which drove him to redress the rage of the oppressed. As a military tactician, he was equally brilliant on the battlefield and in guerilla warfare. In March 1916, Villa crossed into US territory and raided Columbus, New Mexico, evoking the wrath of the US government. His many exploits burnished his image as a reckless hero who for years eluded capture and punishment.
