Sogu Katachi 05 (Sliced Form 05)

2005
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 225
Coming from a long lineage of potters in Seto, one of Japan’s historic ceramic centers, Nagae Shigekazu creates works that fuse technical mastery with expressive form. This thin-walled white porcelain began as a perfectly measured parallelogram, which the artist then bent and distorted in a high-temperature kiln using supports and weights. After firing, he sharpened the edges and textured the surface with sandpaper and applied a thin, clear glaze, before returning the object to the kiln. The resulting form—undulating and hovering—evokes a bird poised to take flight.
