John Milton
This engraving, based on a painting by the Dutch artist van der Plas, identifies the sitter as Milton. A plainly dressed figure places his hand on his heart, with a pilgrim's staff and bottle used to suggest his lifelong journey of faith, and an image of Christ at upper right representing the object of his devotion.
