Designs for five bracelets with diamonds and pearls

ca. 1830–70
Not on view
Drawing with designs for five bracelets, part of an album of drawings in pen and ink of designs for jewelry in the style of the French School of the 19th century, designed for the French jewelry house Mellerio-Borgnis. The first bracelet is made up of a golden bangle with a green and yellow frame containing a large emerald, flanked by groups of three small, round pearls on each side; another group of three round pearls flanks the upper side of the frame, and the sides are flanked by stylized silver leaves and round pearls. The second bracelet is made up of a yellow bangle, around which scroll two green "ribbons", possibly to be made with enamel, with strips of square-cut diamonds or brilliants in the center; a diagonal garland of silver stylized leaves and oval pearls lies between the two ribbons, and smaller stylized silver leaves and round pearls are to the outer sides of the ribbons. The third bracelet is made up of an oval frame, left empty in this case, but which would have been personalized for individual customers, flanked by gold scrolls that make up the body of the bracelet. The fourth bracelet is made up of two strips of gold, the space between them decorated by a scrolling garland of thin, gold branches, with stylized green (enamel?) leaves and small, round pearls of varying diameters. The fifth bracelet is made up of a gold bangle, with an opening on the front and a strip of gold that forms a loop in the middle, a red oval that hangs from the loop, and an interlacing garland of stylized, green leaves and small, round pearls; the red and green might have been achieved using enamel or small stones of those colors in the manufactured jewel.
