Three designs for brooches with stylized leaves, angels, and red stones

F. Mellerio Borgnis

Not on view

Drawing with three designs for brooches, part of an album of drawings in pen and ink of designs for jewelry in the style of the French School of the 19th century, designed for the French jewelry house Mellerio-Borgnis. The first design is made up of a large, teardrop pearl of red color, hanging from a gold branch held by two flying angels, and framed by two gold branches with stylized, green leaves, at the bottom of which hangs a bundle of small, round pearls. The second design consists of four oval, red stones, framed by interlacing garlands with stylized, green leaves, and with three teardrop-shaped red stones. The last design is made up of scrolling gold branches with stylized, green leaves, and round and oval stones of red color. The green areas of the designs might have been achieved using enamel or small, green (semi-) precious stones in the manufactured jewel; the red stones could have been rubies, corals, colored glass, or even enamel.
