Design for a corset ornament with stylized leaves and pearls

ca. 1830–70
Not on view
Drawing with a design for a corset ornament, part of an album of drawings in pen and ink of designs for jewelry in the style of the French School of the 19th century, designed for the French jewelry house Mellerio-Borgnis. The design consists of a bundle of stylized leaves of two different types, surrounded by strips of round pearls of different diameters, from which hang four strips of round pearls of decreasing size, ending in a small, thin, teardrop shaped motif. From the center of the bundle hangs a stylized flower, and an undulating branch with stylized leaves, which holds a smaller bundle of stylized leaves and pearls, similar to the first, with only two strips of pearls hanging from the sides this time. The motif is repeated once more, and this time the center holds a stylized, scrolling leaf from which hang three strips of round pearls of decreasing size and a small, thin spade at the end of each strip.
