Merveilleuse: Chapeau de Paille en Corbeille, Robe de Perkale, Souliers d’Homme
Hand-colored engraving with design for the costume of a Merveilleuse, part of the book "Incroyables et Merveilleuses," with 33 costume plates designed by Horace Vernet and engraved by Georges Jacques Gatine, published ca. 1815 in Paris. The costume in this plate consists of a white percale dress, with empire waist, long, puff sleeves with double ruff cuffs, which match a triple ruff collar that envelops the neck, the ruffled edges that decorate the chest, and the ruffled border decorating the calf-legth skirt of the dress. The empire-cut waist is marked by a thin, pastel yellow ribbon, with loose ends on the back, which matches the color of the gloves and the pointed slippers, decorated with small bows. A straw hat decorated with a thin, pastel yellow ribbon, and a large bundle of pink roses, purple and orange flowers, and green leaves, is worn over the short, curly hair, covering the head. A closed, green parasole is held on one hand.
