Merveilleuse: Chapeau de paille Garni de Crêpe, Robe de Perkale Garnie de Mousseline
Hand-colored engraving with design for the costume of a Merveilleuse, part of the book "Incroyables et Merveilleuses," with 33 costume plates designed by Horace Vernet and engraved by Georges Jacques Gatine, published ca. 1815 in Paris. The costume in this plate consists of a white straw bonnet with a puffy crown covered with white crepe, tied around the chin with a pastel yellow ribbon, a white, ankle-length, empire cut dress, white hose and pastel yellow, pointed flats with bows. The collar of the dress consists of layers of scallop-edged white muslin with stylized berries, which cover both the neck and chest. The long sleeves and lower border of the skirt are made up of puffs separated by stripes of scallop-edged motifs, matching those in the collar. The empire waist is marked by a thin, pastel yellow ribbon, tied at the back and with long, loose tails. Pale yellow gloves, a white fichu, and a closed parasole with knotty wooden cane, blue cover and white hanging tassels, complete the outfit.
