Merveilleuse: Costume de Bal
Hand-colored engraving with design for the costume of a Merveilleuse, part of the book "Incroyables et Merveilleuses," with 33 costume plates designed by Horace Vernet and engraved by Georges Jacques Gatine, published ca. 1815 in Paris. The costume in this plate consists of a ball gown with pink bodice with white puffed stripes on the bust, decorated with white ruffles on the neckline, and with short, puffed sleeves with scallop-edged white lace, empire waist, and an A-shaped, mid-calf skirt, with a puffed pink border, and with wreaths made up of white ruffles with pink ribbon borders and pink bows. The hair is tied up with braids, and decorated with a garland of pink roses and green leaves; a mathcing bundle is placed on the left shoulder. Teardrop pearl earrings hang from the ears, and a double necklace with blue pearls hangs around the neck. The long, white gloves are decorated with puffed borders. White hose and flat, pointed-toe shoes with small bows cover the legs and feet.
