Design for an ornamental frame with an eagle, a grotesque, and scrolling acanthus leaves, after Bernard Picart
Page of book containing 185 leaves with a collection of lithographs, aquatints, engravings, and other media, with ornamental designs published by Fleury Chavant in Paris, part of the publication "Guide du Dessinateur de l'industrie: une macédoine de dessins variés , tels que fleurs, ornemens, etc. ... Ouvrage destiné aux fabricants et dessinateurs de soieries... et Papiers Peints..." This plate contains a design for an ornamental frame with an eagle, a grotesque, and scrolling acanthus leaves, after Bernard Picart. The design is made up of a roundel with a scrolling rosette, standing on a small vase with a stylized fleur de lis, around which the frame is formed, flanked above by a grotesque with a crowm holding round fruits, from which emerge stylized acanthus leaves that scroll around the frame, interlaced by thin garlands with stylized flowers and leaves. The vase under the roundel stands on a semi-circle that rests on the lower scroll of the frame, which is flanked by an eagle, which stands, with its wings open, on a shell motif; thin, scrolling leaves extend to its sides, and holding thin cones with bundles of stylized flowers, fruits and leaves. From the scrolls and the bottom of the shell hang thin ribbons, holding rwo small vases to the sides of the shell. The design is executed with black ink on thin, light brown paper.
