Tigers Hunting Boars and Deer
Western India, Rajasthan, Kota
Not on view
The hunt was central to Kota court life. Since artists routinely accompanied these expeditions, depictions of animals in a landscape feature prominently in the works of the Kota school. In this unusual composition, the human predator has been eliminated; instead, the focus is on a pack of tigers stalking and attacking their prey. The exceptional scale of this ambitious work suggests that it was a preparatory study for a mural painting.
