The Fishmarket, Venice, No. 2

Sir Muirhead Bone British, Scottish
1915
Not on view
Sir Muirhead Bone was a Scottish printmaker and watercolor artist noted for his depictions of architectural and industrial subjects, city views, landscapes, and his work as a war artist in both the First and Second World Wars. He visited Italy from 1910-12. Here, Bone presents a grandly colonnaded interior of a fishmarket with a high wooden ceiling and open arcades on both sides; sunlight emanates from the arcade at left. Three fish vendors converse in the lower left foreground; fish stalls line the shopper's aisle from the lower right foreground to the vaulted portico in the background. In the central aisle, a flat, large round basket is shown balancing upon the head of a tall figure. Bone's print captures the bustling fish market activity of Venice's Mercato di Rialto.
