Fountain Design

Designer Jacques François Blondel French
A. Le Canu French

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 690

As proudly indicated in the caption, Blondel was admitted to the Royal Academy of Architecture (Académie royale d’architecture) in 1755 and gained the title of architect to the king (architecte du roy). That he still collaborated with Saint-Aubin is evident in the sprightly allegorical figures and ornament of this elevation of a fountain in the Doric order. The engraving by Canu credits Blondel with the design but makes no mention of Saint-Aubin. In The Wrath of Neptune, a tiny etching hanging nearby, Saint-Aubin perhaps seeks to reclaim his authorship of the central group.
