Joseph Conrad Listening to Music

Sir Muirhead Bone British, Scottish

Not on view

Sir Muirhead Bone was a Scottish printmaker and watercolor artist noted for his depictions of architectural subjects, city views, landscapes, and his work as a war artist in both the First and Second World Wars. He also made several portraits, including this one of Joseph Conrad (1857-1924), the great Polish-born British novelist, who wrote Heart of Darkness (1899), Lord Jim (1900), and The Secret Agent (1907). Bone met the author on board a ship sailing from Glasgow to New York in 1923; of the three portraits Bone made of Conrad shortly thereafter, this one alludes to the author's great love for classical music.
