Set of four candlesticks

Peruvian

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 535

These candlesticks originally belonged to a set of six that illuminated an altar dedicated to Our Lady of the Pomegranate, a miracle-working sculpture venerated in the town of Llerena in southwestern Spain. The candlesticks and a matching chalice were sent from Peru by a Spanish devotee of the Virgin. Their austere “purist” style, current in both Spain and Spanish America, is visually offset by prominent knops displaying pomegranates that reference the church’s titular Virgin.
