The Months: March

Etienne Delaune French

Not on view

Engraving, part of a series of twelve oval prints with allegorical representations of the months with the seasonal labors inherited from the Middle Ages. The activities illustrated in the series do not seem to have a moral sense, and depict relatively simple scenes with characters dressed in simple garbs, executing their labors in rustic landscapes. In this print, March is represented by an outdoors scene, dominated by Aries, the attribute of the month. In the center, a man cuts vines, and on the left a woman carries a bundle of branches. In the background, a woman walks away, carrying another bundle of branches on her head. The composition is closely related to the representation of March in the "Compost et Kalendrier des Bergers."
