The Martyrdom of Saint Felicity
Engraving, part of a set of 8 prints created by Delaune after Marcantonio Raimondi, Raphael, Rosso, and Michelangelo. This print represents the martyrdom of Saint Felicity, who stands in a large cauldron in the center of the print, with fire burning right under her. Victory, winged, and carrying a palm branch on one hand and a laurel wreath on the other, flies above her, likely symbolizing the triumph of virtue in the life of this saint. A crowd is gathered around her, some of them next to a building, on the upper left, and others under a canopy, on the lower right. An open field is seen in the background, as are the tiny buildings of a faraway town. This is an inverted copy of a print by Marcantonio Raimondi, after Raphael.
