Design for gunsmiths: Upright panel with Adam and Eve

Attributed to Philippe Cordier Daubigny French

Not on view

Engraving with a design for gunsmiths, made up of a vertical panel with Adam and Eve, attributed to Daubigny. The design is made up of an oval in which stand Adam and Eve, both naked, Eve's arms wrapped around Adam, one hand extended to receive the apple that is being offered to her by a snake, scrolling around the trunk of the tree of knowledge, on the left. On the right, next to her legs, are two deers, possibly representing her fertility. Above them is a winged putto, kneeling on the oval and holding a palm leave on his hands, a symbol of victory and eternal life. On the bottom of the print is a grotesque head with foliage, from which emerge thin, scrolling branches with leaves, fruits and flowers, which fill up the rest of the composition, executed on a black ground.
