Engraving, part of 'Omnium pene Europae, Asiae, Aphricae atque Americae Gentium Habitus' (Costumes of the various nations of Europe, Asia, Africa and America), a series of prints representing figures from various parts of the world, engraved by Abraham de Bruyn and published by Joos de Bosscher in 1580.
This engraving represents a noblewoman and three women from Augsburg: a young pregnant woman, a noblewoman, and a plebeian. On the left, the young pregnant woman from Augsburg wears a long gown with a stripe down the center and bordering the skirt, with short puff sleeves over long tight sleeves with ruffled cuffs, high ruff and partlet. A double chain necklace hangs on her chest. Her hair is tied back with braids and a hat with strips of pearls and a bundle of feathers.
On the center-left, the noblewoman wears a sleeveless overcoat over a gown with stripes on the skirt and diagonal stripes with pearls on the front part of the bodice, short paneled sleeves over long, striped sleeves with ruffled cuffs. She wears a ruff and her hair up, held by a hat with pearls and a bundle of feathers. She holds a bundle of herbs in her left hand and a pair of gloves in the right.
On the center-right, the noblewoman from Augsburg wears a gown with striped borders and short puff sleeves over long sleeves with patterns of lozenges and ruffled cuffs. She wears a ruff and a double chain collar under it. Her hair is tied back and covered by a cap with a veil hanging on the back. She holds her gloves in her left hand.
On the right, the plebeian woman from Augsburg wears a sleveless coat over a long-sleeved, long gown with ruff collar and cuffs. Her hair is tied in braids, hanging loose at the back, and topped by a fur hat. She holds her gloves in her hands.
