Engraving, part of 'Omnium pene Europae, Asiae, Aphricae atque Americae Gentium Habitus' (Costumes of the various nations of Europe, Asia, Africa and America), a series of prints representing figures from various parts of the world, engraved by Abraham de Bruyn and published by Joos de Bosscher in 1580.
This engraving represents the costumes of different types of people from Danzig. On the first row, on the left, a woman from Danzig wears a bridal gown, made up of a hip-length jacket with stripes on the borders and long sleeves, puffed at the shoulders, over a long dress with stripes and ruff, and her hair tied up in braids. To her right are three brides from Danzig, who according to the inscription are unlikely virgins, with their bodies fully covered by long, wide cloaks, closed so as to conceal their lack of virginity, with wide, embroidered collars and panels on the front. The collars have geometric and semi-abstract motifs. The panels of the cloak worn by the women on the sides are brocaded with semi-abstract foliage motifs in two cases; those worn by the woman in the center is made of fur. They all wear their hair long, curled, and flanked by large, jeweled headdresses.
On the second row, a maid from Danzig wears an ankle-lenght dress with the long sleeves rolled up, a shawl over the shoulders and tied at the front. On her shoulders she carries a pole, from which hang two wooden buckets. Her hair is wrapped in a headscarf. To her right are two middle-class women from Danzig, wearing pleated cloaks over long dresses with ruff collar and pleated skirts, one of them holding a bucket and with her hair braided and covered with a scarf, the other carrying a small bag and wearing a fur-trimmed hat. On the center-right is a merchant's wife from Danzig, wearing a jacket with long puff sleeves trimmed with bows over a long dress with pleated skirt and an apron with chevron stripes, a ruff and ruffled cuffs, and a bag hanging at her right hip, with her hair tied up and wrapped by a net, accompanied by a young girl wearing a similar dress. Finally, on the right, a girl from Danzig wears a long dress with a striped bodice with ruff, short puff sleeves over long, tight sleeves with ruffled cuffs, pleated skirt with train and apron with chevron stripes. She carries a bag on her left hand and a fan (?) on the right. Her hair is tied up in braids that form a sort of bun at the crown of her head.
