Engraving, part of 'Omnium pene Europae, Asiae, Aphricae atque Americae Gentium Habitus' (Costumes of the various nations of Europe, Asia, Africa and America), a series of prints representing figures from various parts of the world, engraved by Abraham de Bruyn and published by Joos de Bosscher in 1580.
This engraving represents the arms and costumes of Antwerp's bourgeoisie, in two rows of illustrations with labels; it is the second of three plates illustrating such costumes in the album.
On the first row, on the left, are three arquebusiers, dressed with ruffs, striped jerkins over doublets with long puff sleeves, two of them also with wide slit sleeves above them, and padded hose, wearing different sorts of hats with large feathers, and armed with swords and arquebuses. On the right are three lancers, two of them wearing doublets with rows of parallel cuts, paned hose, long in one case and short in the other, and hats with large feathers. The third man wears an ensemble of matching jerkin and tight hose with brocaded scrolling motifs, over a doublet with polka dots, and with a hat with feathers. All three men are armed with their lances and swords.
On the second row, on the left, are two musicians, dressed with striped jerkins over doublets with long puff sleeves and padded hose, wearing hats with feathers and ruffs, one of them playing the drum and the other playing a flute. Next to them are two bearers of the sign: the first, dressed with matching striped doublet and padded hose, a dark jerkin, pointed hat with large feathers, and carrying a fur-lined shield and a rod with a small insignia; the other is dressed in matching doublet and padded hose with polka dots, and striped jerkin, with a band across his chest, and a beret with rosettes, carrying a large flag, blowing in the wind, behind his back. On the right is the lieutenant, dressed with a striped jerkin with open detachable sleeves over a doublet with long puff sleeves, hose with semi-abstract rosettes, and a long hat with a bundle of large feathers. He holds a lance decorated with a tassel in his hand.
