Finely etched and engraved illustrations in this volume offer portraits of British monarchs and nobles beginning with the reign of the Norman King William I, and continuing through that of the Stuart, James II. The latter’s father, Charles I, had been overthrown in 1659 by Republican forces led by Oliver Cromwell and, when the Stuarts reclaimed the throne in 1666, they encouraged renewed attention to royal history. The detailed images also demonstrate a newly antiquarian approach to the past, based on historical sources such as medals, tomb monuments and stained glass.
Folio volume bound in contemporary mottled calf, with a spine gilt in compartments (corners relaid), with Carteret arms stamped in gold on front and back covers. Original end papers. First edition of 1677, dedicated to Charles II. Extensively illustrated with prints derived from coins, medals, tomb sculptures, brasses, etc.
