Wind in the Lotus at Yeast Courtyard (Looking West to Dongpu Bridge)
This photograph presents a narrow view of West Lake in the city of Hangzhou, one of the most famous scenic spots in China. The expanse of broad leaves and blossoms extending almost to the top of the composition resonates with the Southern Song poet Yang Wanli’s (1127–1206) description of West Lake in summer: “Lotus leaves stretching to connect with the sky form an infinite expanse of green. / Lotus flowers reflecting the sunlight are extraordinarily red.” Conner’s high horizon line, marked by the distant arch of a bridge, emphasizes the vast expanse of plants that have completely obscured any view of the water. Conner has long been influenced by the format and subject matter of traditional Chinese painting.
