[Loggia di Fra' Giacondo, Piazza dei Signori, Verona]

ca. 1858
Not on view
Maurizio Lotze trained as a painter and lithographer in Meissen and Dresden before taking up photography. In 1854 he relocated to Verona—then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire—where he founded his own firm. He explored a wide range of subjects, but his bread and butter was in the commercial work of portraiture and architectural views. This photograph demonstrates his preference for high vantage points, which allowed for sweeping vistas of the city’s monuments. Here, people engaged in the business of everyday life animate the piazza in front of the fifteenth-century council hall.
