Two Soldiers, One Standing Holding a Flag, One Seated Seen from Behind

Etcher Matthias Pfenninger Swiss
1764
Not on view
This print comes from a set of "Eight Studies of Soldiers" (2018.54.1-.8) designed by Loutherbourg during his Paris years, 1755–71. While himself an accomplished printmaker, Loutherbourg here turned the etching over to the Zurich-born Matthias Pfenninger, then studying in Paris. The images demonstrate admiration for the Italian 17th-century printmaker, Salvator Rosa.
