Wave
Monden Kōgyoku Japanese
Not on view
Monden Kōgyoku, an artist who has had a long and prestigious career, created this undulating sculptural work using the “rolling-weave” (uneri-ami) technique. For two decades after World War II, during a period of economic turmoil, the artist made thousands of utilitarian baskets for wholesalers.
A local department store manager, learning of his reputation, invited him to present an exhibition of flower baskets, launching his career as a bamboo artist. Kōgyoku, who lives near Hiroshima, became an active leader of bamboo art in his prefecture and has been a full member of the Japan Art Crafts Association since 1991.
