Bone plaque with Female Dancer

Late Roman/Early Byzantine

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 302

This elegant bone carving is a rare example of a female mythological figure. Though the function of the relief is unknown, it might have been used as an appliqué for a box or furniture.
